Kitbash and Greenstuff Like a Boss

Tips, Tricks, and Tools for Building Better Models

10:30 – 12:30

Most modelers already know the basics of kitbashing, but this course will help you take your work to the next level. Mr. Pink from Modern Synthesist will guide you through his award-winning process for kitbashing, including explanations of the various tools he uses, and shortcuts for combining kits quickly. He’ll even share a couple of quick greenstuff hacks that anyone can pull off (yes, even you!). There will be time for you to get specific advice on any kitbashing projects that are giving you trouble, even if they’re simply ideas that you haven’t even started on.

Class format – Lecture and Workshop: Though this class will begin with Pinky giving you a rundown of his tools and his process, there will also be workshop time built in at the end so that you can get one-on-one feedback on your kitbash projects.

What to bring: We’ll have some spare models on hand for you to experiment with, but please bring some of your existing kitbashing tools, as well as a model that you’re currently kitbashing or would like to kitbash and are looking for help with.

Beyond Basic Colour Theory

1:30-3:30

Do you want to take your understanding of colour to the next level? To develop the tools to ensure your pieces have a strong ambience? Kyle Maitland has put together a short talk (with some activities) to help familiarize yourself with the tools and methods that can aid in understanding how to bring your colour use out of the basics and to help you take the steps to develop colour that makes your pieces look complete and cohesive. The goal of this class is to give you the knowledge and tools to improve your colour overall, with discussion as a key element. We will play with paint to drive some points home, but we will not be painting a specific miniature for this. If you bring any pieces you would like feedback on in this regard, Kyle will be happy to offer it (may occur shortly after the class, due to time constraints).

Topics that will be covered:

  • Introduction to a more comprehensive colour wheel and alternatives to a simple red blue yellow primary colour system
  • Insight into what goes into making paint and how you can apply that knowledge to have more control over your paint
  • Gamut mapping – what it is, how to use it, and how its application will improve the ambience of your pieces almost instantly
  • A discussion and analysis of ambience in general

What you can bring: A set of primary colour paints you are comfortable with, a brush (doesn’t need to be anything fancy, base pasting special is enough), and a small palette. Kyle will have a set of paints to share if you prefer.

Events

Sword & Brush Masters Speed Painting Contest

11:00 – 3:30

Speed painting has evolved! Inspired by the popular online web series Miniature Masters, this years speed painting contest has a new twist. You will have 4 hours to complete your model to the best of your abaility:

  • Bring your own pre-built and primed model, any subject (fantasy, sci-fi, or historical)
  • You must bring all your own paints, brushes, and other equipment. Water, cups, and paper towels will be provided.
  • No airbrushes. We have limited access to power and can’t guarantee everyone will be able to use their own lights, hairdryers, etc. Plan to paint without them.
  • The contest runs from 11am to 3pm. You must complete your model in that time, so bring something you can finish!
  • Show judges will pick the winner to be announced during the awards ceremony.

Space is limited so be sure to register your spot!

Painting Hangout

All day.
